Hair on specific areas of the body may not be acceptable within one society, but may be completely acceptable within a different society. For those societies where hair on certain areas of the body is unacceptable, removal of unwanted hair is a desired practice. This is true in most developed countries around the world. Certain religions in the world require men to grow facial hair. So whether or not hair should be removed depends on what is acceptable within that culture.

Our discussion here is based on the premise that hair on certain areas of the body is considered unacceptable. Specifically hair on the female face, armpits and legs. For men within most societies, having hair within the male armpit and on the male legs is of real no concern. For men, the age old method of daily shaving facial hair, if a beard is not desired, works just fine. Within many societies, societal norms dictate that more hair is a masculine feature and less hair is a more feminine feature. Therefore, in most societies, the female has a desire to remove unwanted hair. But lately, many men also desire to remove hair, particularly on the upper torso region. Lets examine some of the current methods for hair removal that exist in most developed countries.

Hair removal can be classified into two basic groups. One group is temporary hair removal. Defined as a few days to a few weeks in length. The other group is permanent hair removal defined as hair removal which lasts at least one year. Lets look at the hair removal methods within this group.

Hair Removal - Temporary Methods

Hair removal that is temporary can involve depilation (removing part of the hair above the skin’s surface) or epilation (removing the entire hair).

Temporary Hair Removal - Depilation Methods

  • Shaving or Electric Razor:
Shaving using an electric razor, or using a razor blade with some sort of cream are depilation methods. Here you are simply cutting the hair above the surface of the skin. This is a very common method of temporary hair removal for unwanted armpit, legs, and bikini hair for the female. The problem is, this method only keeps the hair off for a relatively short time, and it can become tedious and a hassle, especially for the woman who is working and needs to maintain a professional yet feminine appearance.
  • Cream Depilatories:
These are creams, or powders, which can dissolve the hair itself, without the need for cutting. This works fairly well and lasts a few days to a few weeks. The problem with this method is that it can be caustic and can cause skin irritation for many woman.

Temporary Hair Removal - Epilation Methods

  • Plucking:
This method is useful for unwanted hairs on the face, and for trimming down eyebrows. This method is impractical and to time consuming for removing of armpit and leg hair. Also, this sometimes can be painful.
  • Waxing:
This method does work but it can be messy at times. Here you are applying a wax, and after letting the wax dry, remove the wax which also pulls out the hair. Given that it is also for removing hair temporarily, many woman do not think the method is worth it. Hair removal can be done more quickly and easily with a cream or simply by shaving.
  • Sugaring:
Sugaring is similar to waxing in terms of principle, but it is even more messy then waxing because of the sticky texture of the solution used.
  • Rotary epilators:
This method is similar to an electric razor, but instead of cutting, the hairs are simply pulled out. Therefore, the hair is removed for a longer period of time. This can be painful in the sensitive areas, and in general is more difficult to use compared to a razor.

There are other more permanent methods available for removing unwanted hair. These methods are longer lasting, and by definition should last at least one year. In the hair removal industry, permanent means one year or more, and not the normal definition of the word permanent meaning forever. Lets examine some of these methods.

Hair Removal - Permanent Methods

  • Electrolysis:
This method usually lasts longer then all other methods. This method can last years. But you pay for what you get in terms of cost. Also, if not done properly, can damage the skin.
  • Laser:
This method results in damage to the hair follicle, while not damaging the surrounding tissue. By damaging the hair follicle, this prevents the hair from growing. This method has produced some good results but because it is a fairly new method, long term effectiveness studies have not been established.
  • Flashlamp:
This method also results in damage to the hair follicle, but just as in the laser method, long term effectiveness studies have not been established.
  • Oral and Topical Prescriptions:
These have a biological affect and require continuous use in order to be effective. Topical prescriptions simply have a biological effect topically, and should not be confused with temporary hair removal by cream depilatories, which simply dissolve the hair.

These permanent methods have been approved by the FDA to be safe. The degree of effectiveness varies with the method.

So as you can see, there are a number of methods that can be used for hair removal. The method that you select is determined by cost, time in which it lasts, effectiveness, and basic time and energy required in order to achieve a desired result. While most woman simply either shave or use a cream depilatory, this site was built in order to inform you of the various other methods which are available today. The following is a hair removal directory, a discussion about hair removal scams, the most current news about hair removal, and some videos about hair removal. Hair Removal - Scams You Should be Aware Of

  • Transdermal Electrolysis:
Simply put, there is no data available which shows this method can result in permanent hair removal.
  • Electric Tweezers:
There is no clinical data which proves the effectiveness of electric tweezers, and these are much slower then regular tweezers in terms of hair removal.
  • Topical Hair Growth Inhibitors:
There is one hair growth inhibitor product which has proven effective and that is Vaniqa. Most of the others simply do not work. For a complete list of those products which do not work go to Hair removal inhibitors to avoid.

Hair Removal - Conclusion

Today, because of the advancement in methods within the hair removal industry, there are many options available for men and woman. While many still prefer to use the depilation method which is a simple cutting of the hair, or epilation which is the removing of the hair, there are hair removing methods which have a greater degree of permanence.
